A Milestone in Forensic History

Forensic milestones timeline

On 1 July 2026, the Metropolitan Police will mark 125 years since the establishment of the Fingerprint Branch at New Scotland Yard.

What began as a pioneering approach to identification became the foundation of modern forensic investigation.

Over the past 125 years, forensic science has evolved from fingerprints and photography to DNA, digital evidence, biometrics and advanced investigative technologies - while remaining central to protecting the public and supporting justice.
