Dr Mark Spencer
Dr Spencer started regularly working on forensic, primarily criminal, cases in 2011 and he is frequently engaged by forensic service providers and UK police forces to provide specialist forensic services.
His areas of forensic expertise lie principally with assessing vegetation for evidence of human activity and the interpretation of botanical evidence relating to that activity. This expertise includes missing person and body searches, documentation of deposition and burial sites as well as laboratory-based work, including the examination of trace evidence.
He co-chairs the Forensic Science Regulator’s Non-Human Biology specialist group and a Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. Dr Spencer has worked since 2002 as a professional botanist, 12 years of which were at the Natural History Museum, London, which is where he first encountered the world of forensics.
