Professor, Head of the Centre for Forensic Soil Science , James Hutton Institute

Professor Dame Lorna Dawson DBE is a leading forensic soil scientist, Head of the Centre for Forensic Soil Science at the James Hutton Institute and honorary professor at RGU. She has contributed her expertise in soil and geological traces to over 200 criminal cases in the UK and internationally and has published more than 150 scientific papers. 

Dame Lorna serves on multiple national and international forensic science committees and working groups, including treasurer of IUGS, IFG. Her honours include a DBE (2026) for services to innovation in soil and forensic science, a CBE (2018), the RSE James Hutton Medal (2023), the ProteoMass Scientific Society Award(2024) and the Fletcher of Saltoun Award(2024) for excellence in science.
