Alistair Vannan
Alastair has practiced professional archaeology for over twenty years and has been a full-time forensic archaeologist at Cellmark Forensic Services since 2014.
As the Science Lead for Forensic Archaeology at Cellmark, he is responsible for overseeing all matters relating to quality, training and competence, as well as research and development. Alastair undertakes a wide range of casework for the police, military, defence and cold case reviews, utilising specialisms in landscape and spatial analysis, remote sensing data analysis and 3D modelling, in addition to undertaking incident-scene examinations and searches. He is a specialist in the reconstruction of historic environments in a forensic context and is an experienced expert witness in both criminal courts and coroner's inquests.
Alastair also advises on the wide range of forensic environmental sciences and is experienced in providing training to the police and to professionals from other disciplines. He has been the joint Chair of the Forensic Archaeology Expert Register and Panel (FAEP) for the last six years, which sits within the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA). In this role, he recently jointly revised the Standard and Guidance for Forensic Archaeologists, which was published in 2026.
